Inmate Search in West Virginia

Most states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through a website for use by the public. Each state maintains its own website independently. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal. State laws determine some of what will be available to the public.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell that any problem exists, because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on offenders who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include offenders who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system. West Virginia’s website includes offenders who have not yet been incarcerated, but who are awaiting trial.

This directs you to the West Virginia Department of Corrections offender search page. This page is very basic in design and provides two search boxes. You can enter the offender’s last name in full or in part if you do not have the correct spelling.

Additionally, you can enter the offender’s first name, but this is optional. If you elect to search without entering a first name, offenders of both sexes will be returned in your results. If you enter a first name, then only offender’s who match the name will be returned in the results. If you enter an initial only for the first name, then all offenders’ who match the last name and the first initial of the first name will be returned in your results.

Below the search boxes, you are presented with an option to submit the information or to reset the search. A statement exists below the submit button that reminds you that you are making this request for public records in accordance with the West Virginia Freedom of information Act.

Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated in a grid like chart. At the top of the chart, the total number of results to your search request is indicated. Next to that is an option to search again.

The chart includes the following headings: offender detail, last name, first name, middle name, birth date, and gender. If more than one page of data is generated from your request, an option exists to the lower right hand corner of the chart that allows you to select the page that you wish to view. To the right of this option, the total number of available pages for these specific results is included.

Under the heading labeled “offender detail,” a link exists for each offender that generates a new page of itemized details concerning the particular inmate. They include the following two categories: imprisonment status and offender court order information.

The results for imprisonment status will appear in a chart that includes the following information: full name, height, weight, birth date, gender, booking date, facility, and imprisonment status. On the left hand side of the page, a picture of the offender is presented with an option to download the image.

Directly below this, the offender court order information chart provides the following information: court information number and issuing agency location. Two options are available at the bottom of the information. They are either to return to the offender search results or to return to the offender search.
