Inmate Search in Texas

Thirty-three states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction as a website for use by the public. Each state maintains its own web site independently. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for viewing. State laws may determine some of this.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you wonít be able to tell because the missing information is minimal. The Texas Offender search will not produce any results unless your browser is set to accept cookies and pop ups.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include information on inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Texas, use the following link:
http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/offender_information.htm.

This directs you to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice web page for its offender search. Directly under the heading, drop down menus provide live links for information pertinent to the following categories: contact, organization, general information, employment, employee resources, and fugitive watch. Additionally, a live link is available to access the website in Spanish.

The rest of the page is divided into five main sections labeled: Offender information, Requests by telephone, General information only, Parole problems & questions only, Problems & questions relating to offenders, and Canít find offender in TDCJ (Texas Department of Criminal Justice). The first section informs the viewer that an offender search in Texas can be accomplished online, by telephone, or by e-mail. Requests made by e-mail will take up to six weeks to process.

In the second section, Requests by telephone, contact information and availability are provided. In order to search for an offender by telephone, you must have either the TDCJ or SID number for the inmate or the exact birth date of the inmate. The following is the telephone number for Huntsville only: 936-295-6371. A toll free number is available for all other areas: 800-535-0283. Additionally, if you are calling for information on a parolee, you must call one of the following numbers and you must be able to provide the TDCJ or SID number for the inmate- Huntsville: 936-291-2106 or Austin: 512-406-5202.

In the third section, General information only, a live link is available to access the offender search page. Additionally, information is provided for accessing the information by e-mail. The offenderís name should be included in the subject line of your e-mail. You must include either the offenderís TDCJ or SID number or exact birth date. Send your request to classify@tdcj.state.tx.us.

In the fourth section, Parole problems & questions only, contact e-mails are provided for three separate areas of concern. They include: parole.div@tdcj.state.tx.us -questions regarding parole supervision, parolee location, parole review process, and parolee conduct; parole.pio@tdcj.state.tx.us -open records requests for parolees, and bpp-pio@tdcj.state.tx.us -questions regarding executive clemency, special review, and Board of Pardons and Paroles issues.

In the fifth section, Canít find offender in TDCJ, several websites are provided in the event that you would like to continue your search outside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Once you select the link for the online offender search, you will be directed to a new page that includes the following search boxes: last name, first name, race, TDCJ number, SID number, and sex. The search boxes for race and sex have drop down menus for the convenience of the user.

Information is available to provide search hints for the user of this site at the lower half of the page. Additionally, a disclaimer is listed asserting the possibility that some inaccuracy may exist and that anyone who uses the information contained within the website is solely liable for any inaccurate disclosures that are made using the information.

Once you have entered your data and selected to submit your request, your results will be generated. Your results will include information on the following: TDJC number, offender location, offense of conviction, incarceration history (includes information on offense, county of conviction, court of conviction for previous offenses), current incarceration, and projected release date.
