Inmate Search in South Carolina

Several states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through a website designed for use by the public. Each state maintains its own independent web site. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal. State laws determine some of the information that is available on the site for public viewing.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system. The South Carolina Department of Corrections does not provide information on the following types of offenders:
• Offenders who are currently on parole, probation, or another form of supervision
• Offenders who have been released from all forms of incarceration or supervision
• Offenders who are sentenced to county detention facilities
• Offenders who are under the supervision of the Juvenile Justice Department
• Fugitives

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of South Carolina, use the following link: http://www.doc.sc.gov/InmateSearch/InmateSearch.html. This directs you to the main page for the South Carolina Department of Corrections webpage for offender searches.

On the left hand side of the page, links are provided to access information on the following topics: Agency History, Employee Information, Employment, FAQ’s, Fugitives, Information for Family Members, Inmate Search, Institutions, Organizations/Contacts, Prison Industries, Procurement, Public Information, Related Sites, Statistical Reports, and Victim Services.

In the center of the page, a disclaimer is listed asserting the possibility that some inaccuracy may exist and that anyone who uses the information contained within the website is solely liable for any inaccurate disclosures that are made using the information. A toll free phone number, 877-846-3472, is provided for information concerning the inmate search service.

Additionally, individuals who discover what they believe to be an inaccuracy are advised to contact the department through the following email address: corrections.info@doc.state.sc.us. Below this, a link is provided to access the search feature of the site.

A new page is generated that provides instructions on using the search feature along with the search criteria boxes. Users are advised to leave the search criteria boxes blank if they do not know the requested information. Moreover, if the user is unsure of the spelling of the offender’s name, a check off box is available for phonetic matches to the spelling that is provided.

Four search boxes are presented including: SCDC number, first name, last name, and SID. Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated. An option to reset the search also exists.

The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart to the right of the search boxes. The chart includes the following headings: SCDC number, name, sex, race, height, weight, and age. The names are presented in alphabetical order. Each SCDC number is a live link that provides additional details on the offender. A scrolling bar exists on the chart to provide access to all of the results.

If you elect to access additional information on any inmate in particular, the results appear on the same page below the chart. A dated picture of the inmate is shown on the left hand side of the page.

In the center of the page, the following information is shown for the inmate: name, SCDC number, SID, date of birth, citizenship, build, complexion, hair color, and eye color. On the right hand side of the page, the following information is shown for the inmate sentence and location: offender type, offense, sentence start date, sentence length, admission date, committing county, location, projected release date, projected parole date, supervised furlough eligibility, and sex offender registry.

When you are finished looking at the information on a particular inmate, the results are still present on the upper portion of the page for viewing.
