Inmate Search in North Carolina

Every year, hundreds of people are incarcerated across the United States for crimes that they have committed. Locating these individuals for personal or practical reasons is now easier than ever through online websites. Thirty-three states participate in providing online access to current inmates housed within their state facilities or monitored by their parole boards.

The states provide this free service on independently maintained websites in the interest of public safety. Since the websites are independently maintained, some variations exist in design. Moreover, depending on the laws in a particular state, the information that is provided may differ.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

The North Carolina site allows you to search for an inmate using his name or ID number. Their database only holds information for individuals who have become an inmate, parolee, or probationer since 1972. It also maintains data on escapees and inmates who have been released.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of North Carolina, use the following link: http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/apps/offender/menu1.

This directs you to the North Carolina Department of Correction Public Access Information System web page. A main menu list is presented in the center of the page and includes links for the following: search for an offender, download public access files, view offender data for advance users, escapes and captures, inmate releases, and frequently asked questions.

Directly beneath this list is a disclaimer statement that indicates that every attempt has been made to provide accurate information. Additionally, the following address is provided in the event that you have questions or concerns:

North Carolina Department of Corrections
C/o Public Information Office
MSC 4202
Raleigh, NC 27699-4202

If you click the link for search for an offender or follow this link http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/apps/offender/search1, it will take you to the main search page.
Instructions inform you that you must enter either the DOC number (Department of Corrections) or at the very least, the first two letters of the last name. Six search boxes are available: DOC number, last name, first name, middle initial, gender, and race. Both of the search boxes for gender and race have small drop down boxes for your selection.

A link that directs you to search tips is available in the upper right hand corner of the screen. The search tips are very helpful to narrow your search down considerably.

It is important to note that the name you type in will match completely with the names that are returned in your search. Therefore, if you are unsure of the spelling of the name, it is important that you use the first few letters rather than an incorrect spelling. Moreover, an option to select “sounds like” is available for the hard to spell names. Moreover, not all offenders have their middle initial included in their committed name. Therefore, you may want to omit that from your search criterion.

Moreover, if you have the DOC number, no other search criterion is necessary. It is also suggested that you take advantage of the gender and race options to limit the number of responses that are returned. All of the search entries are optional with the exception of either the DOC number or the last name.

Once you enter your data, you may select whether you want to include sentence history with the data that is returned to you. Additionally, you may elect to include the offender’s photograph when available. Three choices are presented directly below this: search for offender, reset, or clear.

The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart. At the top of the chart, it will list the number of matches that were generated. The following headings are used to display the data from left to right: offender name, DOC number, gender, birth date, race, supervision status, and inmate status. At the bottom of the chart, you are presented with the option to click “next” or “new search.”

The DOC number is a live link that will direct you to a new page that includes a chart containing more information on the individual. The chart bears the title “General Summary Information.” It includes the DOC number, inmate status, name (including aliases), gender, age, race, and birth date. If one is available, a picture will also be shown.

Directly beneath this chart, a chart titled “Most Recent Incarceration Summary” is included. This presents information on the inmate’s latest conviction. If you requested sentencing history, a series of charts will follow that include all of the pertinent facts to each sentencing.

Directly below the last entry, a link is available to take you back to the previous page, the home page, or the main page of the North Carolina Department of Correction Public Access Information System.
