Inmate Search in New Jersey

Currently, New Jersey operates fifteen facilities for its inmate population. The New Jersey Department of Corrections maintains a website that allows free searches of current inmates within their system.

To access the New Jersey Department of Corrections use the following link: http://www.state.nj.us/corrections/.

This will direct you to the homepage. On the left hand side, a menu selection exists. Click the choice for offender search. This will direct you to a new page where you will need to read and either accept or decline the information presented in the site’s disclaimer statement. If you decline, you will return to the homepage. If you accept, you will be directed to a new page.

This page will have the same side bar of available links and heading listing the acting commissioner of the department. At the top of the page, you are informed that your search will be limited to 250 results. Additionally, it is stated that you will be required to modify your data selection if this occurs.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections Offender search allows for multiple search criterions. Each of the search entry boxes is labeled and each label is a live link. If you click on the link, you are directed to a definition for the term that you selected.

Six main sections exist on the search data form including:
• SBI number, name, and sex
• Hair color, eye color, and race
• County of commitment and current facility location
• Birth date and age
• Photo options
• Display and submit

In the SBI number, name, and sex section, you can list the following information: SBI number (number used by New jersey to identify the inmate), last name, first name, and sex. For sex, you have the option to select all if you so not know the sex, male, or female. Underneath the option for the name, you can also opt to search for known aliases, no aliases, or for an exact match on the entered name.

In the hair color, eye color, and race section, three separate boxes are available for your three categories. Each box provides a scroll through selection of choices that you simply click to select. You can also select multiple items within a list by holding down the control (Ctrl) button while selecting.

In the County of commitment and current facility location, two separate boxes are available for the two categories. Each box provides a scroll through list of choices that you simply click to select. You can also select multiple items within a list by holding down the control (Ctrl) button while selecting.

In the Birth date and age section, you must fill in all of the boxes in order to process the search. You must list a birth date between two dates, including month, day, and year. The selection boxes for these are scroll through lists that allow you to click your choices. Additionally, you must include two different ages for a range of ages to be searched.

In the Photo options section, two choices are available. You may elect to disable any available offender photos or to allow them to show. If you disable the photos, your search results will appear more quickly.

In the Display and submit section, you have an option to select how many results you want to views at a time. Your choice is limited to 5, 10, 15, or 20. The last remaining choice is to select submit or reset the search.

Once you enter all of your information and click select, it only takes a few moments for the results to appear. The data will be presented in a chart like manner and includes the following data: SBI number, last name, first name, birth date, sex, race, county of commitment, admission date and facility.

If you selected to disable available photos, a small red x in a box appears to indicate that a photo was available for that inmate. If you elected to allow the photos to load, then a small icon of a camera will be present in the first column.

Each of the column headings allows you to sort the column’s contents in either an ascending or a descending order. The inmate’s SBI number is a live link that will provide additional information on the inmate when clicked. If the inmate is housed in a facility, the name of the facility listed in the chart is a live link that will provide additional information on the facility.

If you click on the inmate’s number, the following information is presented in an elongated list: SBI number, sentenced as (committing name), race, ethnicity, sex, hair color, eye color, height, weight, birth date, admission date, current facility, projected max release date, and projected parole eligibility date.

Directly below this information, a grid like chart of the inmate’s offense information is presented in a chart labeled “Current Prison Sentence.” Within this chart, each crime for which the inmate was convicted is listed along with pertinent information. The following columns of information are presented: offense, offense date, sentence date, county of commitment, commitment order, mandatory minimum term, and maximum term.

Directly below this chart, the incarceration history including the date in custody and the date out of custody is presented. Nest to this information, a list of known aliases, if any, is listed.
