Online searches for inmates are possible with the inmate population of many states. The State Department of Corrections in 33 different states participates in providing online search services for inmates. The program is useful as a tool to gather specific information on current inmates.

Each of the participating states provides and maintains an independent website where individuals may search for inmates. Since each of the states has a slightly different set up, different pieces of information about the inmate may be required from site to site. The necessary information may be a partial name, a full name, a birth date, or an incarceration number. In Nebraska, you can begin a search with either a last name or an inmate identification number.

The database of inmates in some states may include inmates who have recently been released from prison until the system is properly updated. Additionally, some states maintain the inmate’s information in their database even after they have been discharged from the facility.

The service is free of charge for anyone. It is provided to law enforcement agencies, as well as to the general public, in the interest of public safety. Some minor variations in the way the data appears on your screen can exist across browsers. However, the information remains intact.

Once you have filled in the information that you have available, click the button labeled “submit.” After a few seconds, you will either receive results or no results. Either way, the new page is titled “Inmate NAME Locator Results.” Directly under the title is a link labeled ‘Locate another inmate.”

If no inmate is located, you are directed to the “Inmate NAME Locator Results” page that informs you of this. At the top of the page, the name or Id number searched is listed. Directly underneath that, the top of the data results grid appears. Directly underneath that, you will see an information message highlighted in a pale aqua blue. The message states that the name was not found. A link labeled ‘Search for another inmate” is provided within the message.

On the other hand, if your search is successful, you are directed to the “Inmate NAME Locator Results” page. At the top of this page, your search name or Id number is listed. Directly underneath that, a line of text explains that you can click on an inmate’s name to view information on the inmate. Directly below this message, a grid containing the results appears.

The following information is included for each inmate that is listed: inmate committed name, alias/ legal name, DCS ID Number, gender, date of birth, age, current status, facility, and race. Some of the information may not be available in the grid concerning on the inmate that you have selected.

If you elect to click on the inmate’s name, you will be directed to a new page of information. This page is titled “Inmate Information.” Directly under the title is a link labeled “Search for another inmate.” Below this is a link that allows you to go back one page.

The information is resented in a chart with four pieces of information including the description of the crime, the run code for the crime, the offense term expressed as a minimum term to the maximum term, and the county of commitment.

Directly below this chart, available alias names are listed. If any middle names have been used, they are listed as well.
