these individuals can be quite a
task. Fortunately, 33 states are
participants in providing online
access to the current inmates in
their state facilities. The states
provide this free service on
independent websites in the interest
of public safety. This entitles the
general public to access the records
as well as law enforcement agencies.
Since the websites are independently
maintained, some variations exist in
design as well as in the information
that is provided. It is important to
note that the website with may not
work properly or it may not work at
all with certain browsers. In fact,
the web pages may partially load
onto your computer screen, but
integral parts may be missing. If
you encounter this difficulty, you
may want to consider using a
computer at a public library to
complete your searches.
The Mississippi site allows you to
search for an individual using his
first and last name.
To acquire access to the database
for inmates in the state of
Mississippi, use the following link:

This link directs you to the main
page of the Inmate Locator for
Mississippi. The top of the page is
labeled MDOC (Mississippi Department
of Corrections) Inmates. Two search
boxes are located near the top of
the page. The first search box is
labeled “Last Name” and the second
search box is labeled “First Name.”
Fill in the last name of the inmate
for whom you are searching. If you
have it, fill in the first name of
the inmate for whom you are
searching. Once you have entered
your data, click the button labeled
“find.”
After a few seconds, the computer
screen will either show results or
no results. If no results are found
for the search that you have
attempted, the top of the grid
appears on the screen with the
message “Inmates Found: 0”
underneath of it. Unfortunately, on
this particular web site, no other
recourse exists if you have obtained
no results with your search. Unless
you can discover possible aliases
for the inmate, you will not be able
to continue your search.
If your search is successful, a list
of inmates in the system with the
name that you provided will appear.
At the bottom of the list, the total
number of inmates that you have
located with your search will be
listed as well. The information on
the inmates will be displayed in a
grid like chart.
Across the top of the chart, the
following headings will be listed:
Inmate ID, Last Name, First Name,
Location, Term, and Offense. Each
inmate’s information will be
displayed under the proper heading.
The location refers to the state
facility where the inmate is being
housed. The term refers to the
number of years that the inmate is
serving. The crime that the inmate
committed and has been charged and
sentenced for is the offense.
Clicking on any one of the first
three pieces of information for each
inmate will direct the user to a new
page that includes more information
on the inmate. The information is
presented in an elongated grid on
the left hand side of the screen,
while a front profile or mug shot of
the inmate is shown on the right
hand side of the screen.
The information that is shown
includes: the inmate’s MDOC number,
full name, race, sex, date of birth,
height, weight, complexion, build,
eye color, hair color, entry date
into the system for that sentence,
location, unit number, location
change date, number of sentences,
and the total length of the
sentences. Additionally, information
is presented for each of the
inmate’s offenses including the type
of offence, the sentence received
for the offense, and the county of
conviction. If the inmate has
received a limited term, then the
tentative release date is also
listed at the bottom of the
information.
