Inmate Search in Minnesota

Thirty-three states have joined to provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction web site for use by the public. Each state maintains its own independent web site. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal. State laws determine some of this.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, or no longer resident in the correctional system. On the Minnesota web page, you will only have access to currently incarcerated individuals or those who have been released from prison and yet are still under supervision by the Department of Corrections.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Minnesota, use the following link: http://info.doc.state.mn.us/publicviewer/main.asp.

This directs you to the State of Minnesota Department of Corrections Offender Locator web page. On the uppermost center of this page, you will see the heading, “State of Minnesota Department of Corrections Offender Locator.” Directly underneath this heading, you will see a search box labeled “Search Adult Offenders by Name and/or Birth Date.

You are required to fill in one or more pieces of the following information: first name, last name, birth date, or OID number. The birth date is entered in the following format: mm/dd/yyyy. The OID number is a six digit offender identification number that has been assigned to the inmate by the department of corrections.

Once you have entered the data, you may elect to click the search button if you are ready to begin your search. Additionally, an option exists to select a reset button. To the right of these options, a live link, labeled “search help,” is available to access explanations on the search entry requirements.

One important piece of information that can be obtained there is the fact that the search results will produce all of the names that resemble the letters that you have entered for the names. For example, if you enter the name Green, the results will generate the names of any inmates with the following names: Green, Greener, Greenly, and more. This is particularly useful when you are unsure of the spelling of the inmate’s name.

Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated. The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart. At the top of the chart, the number of results returned will be indicated.

The results that appear in the chart include the following headings: name, birth date, OID number, current status, and location. The location is only presented in an abbreviated form of initials. The name is presented in first, middle, and last format, and it is a live link. If you click on the name, you will be directed to a new page that includes the inmate’s picture, demographic information, and controlling offense information.

The demographic information includes the following: OID number, full name, birth date, current status, location, admit date, anticipated release date, anticipated release type, expiration date, case worker with telephone number, and supervising agent. The location is a live link that if clicked will direct you to a page full of information o the facility including picture, exact location, telephone numbers, contact information, a description of the facility, visiting information, and a daily inmate profile report.

The controlling offense information includes the following: offense description, offense modifier, Minnesota statute, county of conviction, and court file number. The offense description is a live link that generates more specific information on the offense including: a general description, category or degree of the offense, the act, and the specifics of the offense. The Minnesota statute is also a live link that will generate the particular statue in a readable format.

When you are finished looking at the information on a particular inmate, you may select the new search button directly below the information. If you prefer to return to your search results, you can select the back button on your browser, however, this may have timed out and may no longer be available.

The address of the Minnesota Department of Corrections is listed at the bottom of each page, along with contact information. The contact information includes an email address for the webmaster of the site (webmaster@co.doc.state.mn.us) and for acquiring information on offender requests (corecords@co.doc.state.mn.us).
