Inmate Search in Massachusetts

Several states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through a website designed for use by the public. Each state that participates through the Department of Corrections maintains its own independent website. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for public viewing. State laws determine some of the parameters of the site. Some states participate through the Vinelink service and questions for those sites should be directed to 877-421-8463. Massachusetts is one of those states.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Massachusetts, use the following link http://www.vinelink.com/offender/searchNew.jsp.

This directs you to the Massachusetts offender search webpage through Vinelink. On the left hand side of the page, several links offer users the opportunity to access the home page, the search for an offender by name, the search for an offender by ID, and FAQs. A disclaimer is listed at the bottom of each page, asserting that anyone who uses the site may not use the information contained within the website for any purpose other than personal. This disclaimer is presented on all subsequent pages.

To the center of the page, you are presented with the offender search by name. You are given one choice for locations to search- Department of Corrections. Other states have additional options listed. You are required to enter a last name and a first name or initial for the offender or inmate. If you enter an initial only, then all inmates whose first name begin with that letter will be returned in your results. This will include both female and male inmates.

Two optional criteria boxes, date of birth and age range, are also available. Both of these options have drop down menus for ease of selection. These options help to narrow your search. Therefore, if you have an idea of the inmate’s age, you should enter a range for it. If you have the inmate’s ID number, you should select to conduct the search with that option since it will produce the exact results that you are looking to find.

Once you have entered your data and selected to search, the results are generated. If your search does not produce results, that message appears as a line of text in red. If results are generated from your search, they are presented in a grid like chart. At the top of the chart, an indication of the number of results is presented. If the name is an alias, it is presented in italics for easy recognition.

The following headings are included in the chart: register, last name, first name, date of birth, custody status, facility/reason, and agency. The column labeled “register” includes live links that provide additional details on the inmate. If you elect this option, a new page of information is presented with two sections, offender detail and register for notification.

Offender detail includes the following categories: last name, first name, date of birth, offender ID, custody status, reason, race, and gender. The register for notification provides the opportunity to turn in personal contact information in the event that an inmate is released.

If you elected to do your search by the offender ID, you are presented with the same choice for searching facilities- Department of Corrections. You must enter the offender’s ID number and elect to search. In this case, you will receive one result since your search is narrowed by the inclusion of the offender’s ID. The same information that is generated with a search by name appears with a search by inmate ID number.
