Inmate Search in Maine

Several states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through a website designed for use by the public. Each participating state that maintains its own independent website. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for public viewing. State laws determine some of the parameters of the site.

Maine is currently developing an inmate locator search page, but has not yet completed it. It is possible to obtain information about current inmates, and this will be explained in more detail below.

It is important to note that some websites may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches or a different browser. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system. Maine’s Department of Corrections provides information on inmates who are currently in custody with a sentence of nine months or more.

This directs you to the page for frequently asked questions. It will explain in detail the method by which you can obtain information on current inmates in the state of Maine. Those directions are explained here as well.

In order to obtain information on inmates who have a sentence of nine months or more, you must send an email to Corrections.Webdesk@maine.gov. You must include the following information in your request: full name of the inmate, the inmate’s date of birth, DOC number, Department of Corrections, if possible, your full name, and your complete mailing address. Additionally, you must include a brief statement outlining what information you want and what you intend to do with the information.

If you do not have all of the requested information, you should include as much identifying information as possible. For example, many people have the same first and last name, so include a middle name or initial. If the inmate has any identifying tattoos or scars, they can be included as well to help narrow the search in order to provide the correct information on an inmate.

If an inmate in Maine has been incarcerated for less than nine months, you need to contact the county jail where he or she is being held. The addresses and telephone numbers for the county jails in Maine are included here.
