Inmate Search in Louisiana

Several states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through an independently maintained website for use by the public. However, the Louisiana website is provided by Vinelink. Any questions concerning this webpage can be directed to the following number: 866-528-6748. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for public viewing, partly due to state laws.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Louisiana, use the following link: http://www.vinelink.com/offender/searchNew.jsp?siteID=19000.

This directs you to the offender search page for Louisiana. On the left hand side of the page, several links are listed for easy access to additional information. They include the following headings: home, search for offender by name, search for offender by ID, and FAQ.

In the center of the page, a box labeled “search for offender” is available. This allows you to select the area in which you would like to conduct your search including all facilities, Louisiana Department of Corrections, and an option to choose a facility. Directly below these options, you are presented with four search criteria boxes: last name, first name, date of birth, and age range.

The last and first names are required for the search. The first name search is a partial search meaning that all names that contain the letters entered will be returned in the results. The boxes for date of birth and age range include drop down menus for the convenience of the user.

Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated. At the top of the page, a statement informs you as to the number of offenders who were located using your criterion. Additionally, a statement informs you that names that appear in italics are alias names.

The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart that includes the following headings: register, last name, first name, date of birth, custody status, facility/reason, and agency. Underneath the heading labeled “register,” the word “detail” appears for each inmate. This live link will direct you to additional information on the inmate. However, this link does not work with certain browsers and will only direct you to a page asking you to indicate the location that you would like to search. In particular, this does not appear to work properly if you are using Mozilla Firefox as your browser.

Although the offender detail is set up to include the following information: last name, first name, date of birth, offender ID, custody status, agency, race, and gender, not all of the information appears. In fact, the only new piece of information that is provided is the offender’s ID number.

In order to return to your search results, it is necessary for you to use the back button of your browser. To begin a new search, you will need to select from the links located on the left hand side of the page.

A disclaimer is listed at the bottom of each page, asserting that anyone who uses the site may not use the information for any purpose other than personal use.
