Inmate Search in Iowa

Thirty-three states have formed an alliance to provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through a website for use by the public. Each state maintains its own independent web site. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal. State laws may determine some of this.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, or no longer resident in the correctional system.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Iowa, use the following link:
http://www.doc.state.ia.us/OffenderInfo.asp.

On the uppermost center of this page, you will see the heading, “Iowa Department of Corrections” and the address and telephone number the facility. Directly underneath this heading, you will see live links for the following: home, staff directory, and employment information.

Directly underneath these links, you will see several search boxes with the labels: first name, middle name, last name, age, sex, location, offense, and county of commitment. Drop down menus are available for sex, location, and county of commitment. The information listed in both the first and last name will go through a soundex or “sounds like” search. A live link generates a complete explanation with an example for this process.

Directly below the search boxes, a disclaimer is listed asserting the possibility that some inaccuracy may exist and that anyone who uses the information contained within the website is solely liable for any inaccurate disclosures that are made using the information.

On the left hand side of the page a menu of links is listed to access information on the following: mission statement, vision statement, announcements, visiting hours, daily statistics, offender information, organization chart, institutions/districts, publications/newsletters, request for proposal, administrative rules, affirmative action, prison industries, victim programs, restorative justice/interventions, offender telephone services, training center, results Iowa, and prison rape elimination act.

Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated and will appear directly below the search boxes. It isn’t necessary to complete all of the search boxes in order to begin your search.

The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart that includes the following categories: name, offender number, age, and sex. The offender’s name is a live link that generates a new window of information about the offender. The results will appear in a grid like chart that includes the following headings: name, offender number, sex, location, birth date, age, duration, commitment date, tentative discharge date, offense,
