Inmate Search in Alabama

Online searches for inmates are provided by various states that offer a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through website use by the public. Each state maintains its own independent web site. Variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal, partly due to state laws.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, released, or no longer resident in the correctional system. The Alabama Department of Correction inmate database only contains information on currently incarcerated inmates.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Alabama, use the following link: http://doc.state.al.us/inmsearch.asp .

This directs you to the Alabama Department of Correction inmate search page. At the top of the page, you will find a population count for inmates convicted as adults for each of the following categories: black males, black females, white males, white females, other males, and other females, as well as a total count of all males and all females.

On the left hand side of the page, several links are provided to access information on the following: latest news, FAQs, history, accomplishments, newsletters, administrative regulations, organizational chart, administrative investigations, industries overview, industries catalog, inmate search, escapes, parole violators, inmates on death row, execution list, statistical reports, community corrections, facility map, facility addresses, halfway houses, and correctional officers.

In the center of the page, three search criteria boxes labeled AIS number, first name, and name are provided along with an explanation as to the methods in which you can use these. Below these boxes, an option to find records is provided. Once you have entered your data and selected to search, your results will be generated on a new page that also includes the same information links on the left hand side of the page.

The results will be presented in alphabetical order. Only a total of fifty inmates will be included in the search results. If you choose to use the AIS number, the names that you enter will be ignored and only information on the inmate who corresponds to the AIS number will be presented. The AIS number is a unique six digit number that is assigned to each inmate upon incarceration by the Alabama Department of Corrections. It provides the quickest and most accurate search method.

Additionally, it is important to not that all searches will produce variations of the name that you provide. For example, if you enter the name “Joe” for the first name, the results can produce inmates whose names are Joel or Joey since they use the same three letters as Joe.

The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart that includes the following headings: AIS, inmate name, race, sex, birth date, current location, release date, and code.
This is the only information that you will receive on the inmate that you have searched.

At the top of the chart, you can select a link that provides explanations to the following results terms: current location, release date, and code. If you choose to look at this link, you must close it by clicking on the following phrase “close results key” which is presented very faintly below the information. Additionally, a link labeled “search again” is also provided.
